The Future of Tooth Replacement: Dental Implants

Friday, May 15, 2015

In the past, there were a couple methods for replacing missing teeth; both with their drawbacks. This included bridges and dentures. Dentures can be partial or complete depending on the amount of missing teeth. Complete dentures can slip, slide, or irritate the soft tissues inside of the mouth. Partial dentures rely on existing teeth to keep them in place but can still slip and slide. Bridges require adjacent to be prepared and can significantly reduce the prognosis of the teeth.

Dental implants can be the solution to many of these problems.

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are essentially artificial root replacements. The implant is a titanium screw that is gently placed inside the bone. After a period of time, the implant integrates with the bone. The result is a stable base in which a tooth replacement is placed. Dental implants are simply the gold standard for replacing a single missing tooth and are indistinguishable from natural teeth. In addition, they can be used to replace multiple teeth or stabilize a loose or poor fitting denture or partial denture.

Dental implants can benefit the patient over bridge treatment because it is a single tooth replacement for a single tooth problem. For dentures, implants are utilize to snap onto the denture to prevent sliding.

What to Do After Getting Dental Implants

Implants are permanent and should be treated just like the rest of your natural teeth. Proper care and regular dental visits are essential in order to avoid any problematic situations. Even though the surgery removes the periodontal ligament from the tooth and the attachment is secure, gingival can still become a problem is not properly cared for.
